Prescription Drug Updates

Spring 2016

BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina works with a committee of independent physicians and pharmacists within our network to develop pharmacy benefits based on drug effectiveness, safety and value. Attached is an update on some changes in our policies and drug lists — decisions made according to the committee’s recommendations.

The changes affect BlueCross groups using the Preferred Drug List and the Try Generics Drug List. Please note these significant developments:

  • A number of topical drugs are now being excluded. Examples of topical drugs include pain-relief patches, creams, sprays, ointments and gels, as well as products to fade scars. Some of these medications have not been established as safe and effective when used topically, while others have less costly alternatives. Some are combinations of several medications that work just as well when the medications are applied separately.
  • For your convenience, we now are providing an Excluded Drug List. It will be posted on the BlueCross website along with the other drug lists. We will update this list frequently.

See this list for details on topical medications that are being excluded, along with details on alternatives.
